Project 4 - 2008 - Newfoundland & Labrador Schools
- Wollo Community Seed Bank - Ethiopia, Africa
In Association with USC Canada
This year Two Villages has partnered with USC Canada to raise funds for the Wollo Community Seed Bank in Ethiopia. The goal is quite simple – to support the efforts of local farmers and help achieve food supply security.
A seed bank stores seeds as a source for planting in case seed reserves elsewhere are destroyed. It is a type of gene bank. The seeds stored may be food crops, or those of rare species to protect biodiversity. The reasons for storing seeds may be varied. In the case of food crops, many useful plants that were developed over centuries are now no longer used for commercial agricultural production and are becoming rare. Storing seeds also guards against catastrophic events like natural disasters, outbreaks of disease, or war.
The project will include the construction of a seed bank compound in Wollo District, within the Central Highlands of Ethiopia. The space will serve many purposes beyond its primary goal of seed storage and preservation. It is a community centre with a library. The structure will serve as a meeting place and training area. Local farmers will share knowledge of local seed varieties and farming methods.
Farmers in Ethiopia have the knowledge and ability to address food supply issues. The provision of a seed bank will enable the community to work together and ensure long term sustainability.

Project 3 - 2007 - Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland
- Building The Kartaha Primary School Project, Kartaha, Sindhuli
In Association with USC Canada
The Burin Peninsula project represented the kind of growth and community spirit envisioned at the start of this organization. Community leaders Kim Slaney and John Wrixon brought Two Villages and international development to their communities. In association with USC Canada and with assistance from Two Villages, the duo promoted the project and engaged in fundraising activities. Mr. Wrixon took on the project in his 90s. With Ms. Slaney’s support they engaged community members and talked with local schools. Over several months the people of the Burin Peninsula successfully raised the required $7500.00 to help build a school for 200 primary children in Sindhuli, Nepal.
We are humbled by the determination and giving spirit of John Wrixon. Mr. Wrixon worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to raise the money to help build this school. Within a week of having that goal accomplished, on April 26, 2008, Mr. Wrixon passed peacefully away at the age of 96. He is an inspiration to all who consider their ability to make a difference in the lives of others.
Project 2 - 2007 - Eastern Newfoundland
- 10 Schools Helping 10 Schools - Zambia, Africa
In Association with CARE Canada
In association with CARE Canada, Two Villages engaged the people of eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada to help the people of Zambia, Africa within the Kopano project. In supporting CARE Canada’s CAREconnects program, Two Villages reached out to more than 5,400 impoverished children in Zambia, allowing them an opportunity to attend school, increase their earning potential and ultimately give them hope to one day escape their life of poverty. The funds provided will be dispersed to the neediest of the recipient schools. The program allows for updates and a link between both areas of the world. By virtue of generosity, 10 schools and students in Canada have been linked with 10 schools and students in Zambia.
In October, 2007, 10 schools on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador participated in a Rice Day. On that day the children donated their lunch money in exchange for a simple meal of rice. The funds have been sent from each school to CARE Canada. The total funds raised and utilization will be communicated to Two Villages and to each donor school.
